Qalamdan inkwells are often quite beautiful.
Vintage 1600-1900 Makta or pen cutting pads used as a support for cutting nibs on a bamboo or reed qalam pen, as depicted in Traces of the Calligrapher, are often intricately and artfully designed.
Depicted is a makta in ivory with sculpted whirling dervish sikke or hat and pierced islamic calligraphy. Circa 18th-19th century.
Another makta is depicted in multi-wood with elaborate ivory inlays. Circa 18th-19th century.
The Qalamdan stores inkwell, ink spoon, calligraphy scissors, makta, and knife. In addition to qalamdan several other Islamic writing instrument storage systems were used.
