Augsburg, Germany Penner

The Nuremberg / Augsburg area developed a reputation for high quality scientific instruments in the 17th and 18th century, producing  navigation, surveying, and timekeeping instruments for the elite.


A rare Augsburg penner is depicted. Similar to the French Baradelle penners, this instrument is a portable writing compendium containing multiple tools including pen knife, pen holder, inkwell, sander, steel parchment-pricker / bodkin, and additional storage for seal capabilities. The penner tests positive for low gold content. Assembled Length: 13.5 cm.

A similar Augsburg penner in silver is depicted in “Western Writing Implements in the Age of the Quill Pen” by Michael Finley, page 145, figure 198 (1990) and is depicted in color within “Penners, Etuis & Writing Compendia” by Jim Marshall on page 27.

Rare 1760s era Ducal Ludwigsburg porcelain figural rooster ink stand.  The Ducal Ludwigsburg Porcelain Factory was founded in 1758 on the grounds of the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The factory produced high-quality Rococo porcelain until its closure in 1824.


The inkwell bears the Ducal Ludwigsburg crown mark with double C on the underside.  


The ink stand features a colorful rooster with a red comb, matching red and green neck and tail fathers, looking back to its inkwell cover which displays a gold rabbit finial on the cover. Equipped with a quill receptacle on the front breast to hold the pen. 4 3/8" tall x 6 1/2" length.  The inkwell bears the Ducal Ludwigsburg crown mark with double C on the underside.  

A.W. Faber Rose Gold

The exhibited writing set is exquisite18k rose gold with end caps in .950 silver.  This set is equipped with a virtually unused Leroy W. Fairchild Gold Pen  nib.


A.W. Faber Combo

A.W. Faber also produced an attractive pen - pencil combo later in the  19th century, resulting in a compact combo of memorable quality, either equipped with a Leroy Fairchild or Faber Gold Pen nib.



Depicted is a commemorative set of pencils similar to those produced in the mid-nineteenth century by A.W. Faber, varying from extra soft to extremely hard for writing on a variety of surfaces and various shading methods.

A.W. Faber - Paris

The Faber-Castell Company, later known as A.W. Faber, was established in the year 1761 in Stein, Germany. The founder was a cabinet maker named Kaspar Faber (1730–84). Impressively, the company has been under the stewardship of the Faber family for a span of eight generations. 


A.W. Faber maintained a presence in Paris, offering spectacular pen - pencil sets among regular Faber products. A.W. Faber maintained a presence in Paris at 4 Place De L’Opera, offering spectacular pen - pencil sets among regular Faber products. The case is a fine leather creation.


The writing set exhibited here was crafted of 18k rose gold and .950 niello silver, resulting in a beautiful presentation. Faber hallmark is present.

Spectacular pencil made for A.W. Faber in the 4th quarter nineteenth century. 18k, weight 26.5 grams, length 142mm/5.625in.

New York pencil-maker John H. Rauch patented this pencil mechanism June 22, 1869.


Paris / Buenos Aires

The two A.W. Faber instruments depicted at the top were acquired in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Both are 18k rose gold. The center instrument is a unique combo pen / pencil mechanism.

Unique Pen Mount

The depicted Gold Pen mount is reversible (shown above hidden), and is able to function while the pencil is extended / retracted enabling an instant shift between pen & pencil.

A.W. Faber operated Manhattan-based manufacturing for a few pencil & pen holders. Leroy Fairchild, and other Gold Pen makers including A.G. Bagley, were to-the-trade vendors for Faber during this period.
